In a notable development, U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced a new trade agreement with Vietnam on July 2, 2025, marking an important milestone in the bilateral economic relationship between the two countries. Details of the Announced Agreement

According to information published on Truth Social, the trade agreement includes the following provisions:

  • A 20% tariff will be applied to all Vietnamese goods exported to the U.S., replacing the previously threatened 46% tariff. This decision is seen as an effort to “ease tensions” with the U.S.’s 10th largest trading partner.
  • A 40% tariff will be imposed on products originating from third countries but transshipped through Vietnam, aiming to prevent Vietnam from being used as a gateway to circumvent tariffs and commit trade fraud.
  • S. imports into Vietnam will not be subject to tariffs, creating an “unprecedented opportunity” for American businesses to access the Vietnamese market.
  • According to President Trump, the agreement was achieved after three rounds of tense negotiations between Vietnam and the U.S., in addition to direct exchanges with General Secretary Tô Lâm before it was announced.

The success of this agreement will depend on both sides’ ability to adapt and their determination to fulfill the commitments made. This is not merely a trade deal but also a foundation for building a comprehensive strategic partnership in the future.

According to economic experts, this agreement reflects a trend of “restructuring global supply chains” amid escalating U.S.–China trade tensions.
